University Chapel

The current University Chapel was built in 1969 on the original site after the old chapel was destroyed in a fire in YEAR. It is 40,000 square feet and houses five floors of strategically orchestrated architecture. There is no defined front or back to the University chapel, so it is equally welcoming from all sides. The inner sanctuary is 170 feet long, 80 feet wide, and varies in height with an average of 40 feet. The raised pulpit, which serves as a prominent point in the sanctuary, is of the same brick construction as the unfinished walls. The entire chapel is constructed of brick to harmonize with the aging architecture of the rest of the campus. Architects who worked on this chapel include Paul Rudolph, Louis Fry, and namely, John A. Welch.
